Bob Weir had (has?) A great voice for Country music , it's a shame he stuck to the same 5 country songs for most of the Dead's career . I know the rest of the band was burnt on some of those .
So for fun, what Country songs would you have like to hear him cover ? I can think of plenty , but for some reason, this song, "Psycho" keeps coming up in my head !

How about "Pancho & Lefty" by Townes Van Zandt?
Here's a dynamite version by Willie Nelson & Bob Dylan:

or by Townes himself:

Would have fit in with Bobby's outlaw sensibilities. A great song, more "western" than "country" though.
We can have both kinds; Country AND Western!

Interesting question, I've always wanted to hear the boys cover "Long Black Veil" as another western deceit and treachery tune. Now that I think of it, could have been another Jack Straw with Bob & Jerry trading verses.

Why, that's Porter Wagoner ! The Bobby used to do his "Green, Green Grass of Home'" back in the day . Yeah , I think Weir should wear one of those shirts .

Speaking of Porter Wagoner, Bob could have done a killer version of "Cold Hard Facts of Life". Another one of those freaky, sincere, homicide songs .

Merle is covering a Jimmie Rodgers tune "Mule skinner Blues" ( one of the "Blue Yodels" , can't recall the # off the top of my head ) . Lots of great versions of that one ( Bill Monroe, The Maddox Brothers & Rose etc.).
The Dead should have did some Jmmie Rodgers, Garcia did Blue Yodel #9 with the Acoustic Band, and with Grisman on that Dylan sponsored Jimmie Rodgers tribute album ( am I right that that track was the last song her recorded , or even played ?) . Merle is a GREAT performer of JR .
Thanks for the clip .

Here's another, by S Winwood:

Somebody help me, yeah
Somebody help me now
Won't somebody tell me
What I've done wrong

When I was just
A little boy of seventeen
I had a girl
She was my queen

She didn't love me like I loved her
Now I know
Now I'm so lonesome on my own
Somebody help me, yeah
Somebody help me now
Won't somebody tell me
What I've done wrong

I need someone in my life
I need a girl to hold me tight
Someone who can make me feel
Make me feel all right

Somebody help me, yeah
Somebody help me now
won't somebody tell me
What I've done wrong

Somebody help me, yeah
Somebody help me now
Somebody help me, yeah
Somebody help me now
Somebody help me, yeah
Somebody help me now

I would've loved to have heard Jerry do Something Shakin' by David Wilcox, more with JGB than with the GD. Bob would've done a great Six Days on the Road by George Jones via Flying Burrito Brothers.
